'I am pleased with the start of the synthesis process'
Over 100 researchers presented their initial results at the third annual conference of the NRP 80. The event focused on the work on the programme synthesis. Thomas Friemel, President of the Steering Committee, provides insights.
Thomas Friemel, the third annual conference of the NRP 80 took place on the shores of Lake Lucerne in March 2025. How did you experience this event?
We dedicated two days to the start of work on the final NRP 80 programme synthesis. From the outset, it was very important to us to adopt a participatory approach that incorporates all researchers, the Steering Committee members, as well as the input and expectations of stakeholders. We have now tackled this major challenge. At the annual conference, we clarified whether and how we can respond to the questions and expectations of the Federal Council, and the numerous key stakeholders. Based on the interim results of the projects, we have developed some initial joint messages. I am pleased with the start of the process: to see more than a hundred scientists working together on recommendations is impressive.
What comes next?
The task now is to analyse and bundle the numerous considerations and inputs. The NRP 80 extensively covers the social impact of the pandemic. This is about nothing less than the well-being of people in all phases and situations of their lives, but also about the functioning of society as a whole. Within this broad range, the thematic areas 'Public governance and crisis management', 'Well-being and life trajectories', 'Work and economy', and 'Social cohesion and security' start to emerge. At the Programme Conference, four working groups were formed to cover these thematic areas. They held intensive discussions on what we can answer with the findings obtained so far and which gaps still need to be closed. This autumn, we will continue the work on the programme synthesis at four thematic area meetings.
Will the results and recommendations of the NRP 80 have an impact?
Absolutely. The NRP 80 has already been able to contribute to the political process. The Federal Office of Public Health and the Federal Commission for Pandemic Preparedness and Response have included our research programme in the consultation process for the Swiss Pandemic Plan and we will be able to provide important inputs. We are very pleased about this. It pays tribute to the intensive work of the NRP 80 researchers.
